CWARice as an advisory council in Central-West Asia provided feedback on national rice R&D priorities and needs for R. of Azerbaijan identifying concerns on their technology and policy solutions in the rice sector.
Considering appropriate measures taken by the government of Azerbaijan in terms of development of paddy rice farming aligning the state program for the development of rice in the republic of Azerbaijan for 2018-2025, CWARice suggested Rice Seed Production (RSP) as the first and basic element of developing rice sector in Azerbaijan. Government of Azerbaijan through Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Agrarian Science and Innovation Center (ASIC) welcomed Dr. Shahdi’s plan on rice seed production in Azerbaijan. Due to Covid-19, Authorities of Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan arranged a video conference inviting Dr. Shahdi to negotiate on practical actions to be taken by them on this important issue. This official meeting held on Tuesday 22 Dec., 2020 at 3:00 -5:00 p.m. Baku time.
Participants of this video conference included Mr. Imran Jumshudov, Agrarian Science and Innovation Center (ASIC), Director; Mr, Samir Suleymanov-Deputy director, ASIC; Mr, Jabrail Agayev- MoA, Head of Department for Arrangement of Plant Production and Monitoring; Mr, Rafail Mahmudov - MoA, Deputy head of Department for Arrangement of Plant Production and Monitoring; Mr. Faig Khudayev-Director Research Institute of Crop Husbandry; Mr. Yagub Guliyev-Head of Department, ASIC; Mrs. Sevil Abasguliyeva- Head of Laboratory, Research Institute of Crop Husbandry; Mr. Abdin Abdullayev- Head of Crop Breeding Department, Research Institute of Crop Husbandry; Mr. Javanshir Talai- Head of Department, ASIC; Mr, Ramil Piriyev-Head of Department, ASIC.
Firstly, negotiations went smoothly on appreciating CWARice attempts on promoting sustainable rice production in R. of Azerbaijan directed by Dr. Shahdi. After technical presentation of Dr. Shahdi on submitted proposal for their rice sector, they all again welcomed enthusiastically to accomplish proposed work plan at the soonest which based on their statements was really close to determined policies in their approved state program to develop rice production in Azerbaijan. The authorities of ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan cordially requested for consultation on the rice value chain of Azerbaijan totally. Hopefully, Azerbaijani party for this collaboration committed to take needed actions based on Dr. Shahdi’s scientific recommendations.
