Identification of heterotic combinations, estimation of gene effects and combining ability of Central and West Asian rice (CWARice) varieties
In designing an efficient breeding program, the breeder faces a major problem of choosing parents for hybridization. Knowledge of the genetic system, controlling yield and its contributing traits, useful in understanding the genetic architecture of parents and thus help to select parents possessing a good genetic potential. A sound breeding methodology rests on a correct understanding of the gene effects involved. The combining ability analysis provides information about the parents for hybridization. Efficient identification of superior cross combinations is another issue in hybrid breeding. Diallel analysis is one of the most powerful tools for estimating the general combining ability (GCA) of parents and selection of desirable parents and crosses with high specific combining ability (SCA) for the exploitation of heterosis and to get the knowledge of gene effects and variance components.
Materials & Methods
In order to identify heterotic combinations, estimate the gene effects, and combining ability of Central and West Asian rice varieties, this study will be conducted at the Rice Research Institute of Iran for three years. In the first year (2020) the required crosses will be performed. In the second year (2021), the progenies of the Daillal mating design with their parents will be evaluated on the experimental farm.
